Children's Books featuring
Saturday Morning cartoons.
Every Saturday morning, between
1959 and 1964, we would wake up a few minutes before 6:00 am and run
into the living room to turn on the TV. It was just enough time to allow the
TV to warm up and to grab a bowl of Cheerios. Running back in, sloshing milk and
cereal, we would find our place inches in front of the TV, and sitting Indian
style, we impatiently watched the last moments of the test pattern on the
TV to glare back at us. Finally, at approximately 6:02am Saturday Morning
cartoons officially began. We were mesmerized by Heckle and Jeckle, Mighty
Mouse, Casper the Friendly Ghost and of course, a whole array of Hanna-Barbera
Cartoons. Top Cat, Huckleberry Hound, Quick Draw McGraw, Loopy De Loop, Yogi
Bear, the list was endless. The marketing world knew the power of these cartoons
had over little kids who could be quite persistent with their mothers when they
wanted something, like a special brand of cereal, toy or book that features one
or more of the Hanna-Barbera cartoon characters. Golden Press, who published the
Little Golden Books then was no different. So for a short while, Little Golden
Books features authorized editions of the popular cartoons of the time. Somewhat
difficult to find today and even more difficult to find in better than Very Good
condition. These 45 year old and older books are a blast from the past for
anyone who grew up then.
